Volunteer Opportunities

We offer training, flexible hours, and discounted tickets to special events at our museum.

All volunteers must be 18 years old and up.

To show our appreciation of your dedication to the Museum, volunteers will receive:

  • Free admission to the San Diego Model Railroad Museum

  • Employee discount to the gift shop

  • Earn Free passes to hand out to friends and family

  • 1 pass for every 25 hours of service with an annual max of 5 passes

  • Annual appreciation event (contingent on San Diego County COVID-19 safety guidelines regarding events)

Volunteer Museum Docent

Volunteer Docents welcome guests and provide an overview of the museum and the model railroad clubs housed within it. Docents have an opportunity to learn and share historical details of Southern California railroads as well as the complexities of creating model railroad layouts. Docents will be under the direction of the Chief Docent. Note: This volunteer position does not run model trains.

Garden Railroad Volunteer

Garden Railroad Volunteers are in charge of preparing and running the San Diego Model Railroad Museum Garden layout including running trains and helping with any scavenger hunt questions. This is a great opportunity for anyone with an interest in history, model trains or gardening and will be under the direction of the Chief Docent

Exhibit Docent Volunteer

Volunteer Docents welcome guests and provide an overview of the Tijuana and Tecate Exhibit (T&T Exhibit) and to help maintain the exhibit during SDMRM’s Summer Camp sessions. Docents have an opportunity to learn and share historical details of Southern California railroads, specifically this temporary exhibit, as well as the complexities of creating model railroad layouts. Docents will be under the direction of the Volunteer and Experience Coordinator.

Museum Library Volunteer

Volunteer Librarians welcome museum guests into the Erwin Welsch Research Library. They are in charge of inventorying donations, cataloging records, and helping digitize the museum’s archive. Librarians have the opportunity to learn and share information about the railroads, their history and the trains that rans on them. Volunteers do not need to have experience with trains, model railroading or libraries; training will be provided as needed. Library volunteers may choose the shifts they work each month provided that they work a minimum of two shifts that month and that each shift covers a full day (10 am to 4 pm).

Note: This position does not run model trains.
